Understanding the nervous system.
More than stress and relaxation.

Your nervous system is constantly weighing up whether you're safe. Much of what we experience as mood, irritability or exhaustion is a sensible response to that assessment.

Foundations

What the autonomic nervous system does

The autonomic nervous system works largely beneath awareness. It governs breathing, heart rate and digestion, while tuning us to our surroundings: active, alert, guarded or at rest.

These states aren't a matter of character. They're adaptations shaped by experience, and new experience can gradually reshape them.

Connections

Stress, emotion and relationship

The nervous system and stress

Stress begins as mobilisation. It becomes a burden when the system can no longer find its way back to rest.

The nervous system and emotion

Feelings have a bodily dimension. Recognising your states often makes emotions easier to understand.

The nervous system and relationships

We also regulate through one another. A sense of safety often emerges only in contact with others.

Regulation

What stress regulation really means

Regulation isn't about staying calm at all times. It's about flexibility: being able to rise to a moment and then settle again.

In our work together, we learn to notice these shifts, make sense of them and, step by step, gain more room to move.
